AI Transforms Social Media Posts into Chemical Sales Opportunities

Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. and IBM Japan have applied artificial intelligence (AI) to identify business opportunities in the chemical industry. Specifically they have combined Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) with IBM Watson Discovery to analyze reams of data in the public domain, including social media posts, and thereby identify solutions for real-world needs and problems.

In one actual case, more than five million external big data points, such as patents, news and social media posts were inputted into IBM Watson, while a database of Mitsui Chemicals products was also built. Mitsui Chemicals’ specialists in the sales and business domain used IBM Watson to analyze the big data and discover new applications that exceed human preconceptions and current knowledge. For example, in social media analysis, they found that there were many posts citing "musty smell in the local railway," which led to sales of Mitsui Chemicals’ antifungal products for railway applications.

IBM Watson is a powerful AI platform developed by IBM that uses natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to analyze and interpret large amounts of unstructured data.
