Global EV Share Approaches 18%

The global market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs; 12-month moving average) reached 17.51% in July 2025 according to market watcher New AutoMotive. The market share of BEVs rose two thirds of a percentage point in just one month, with the annual rate of growth accelerating from 8.9% to 10.7%.

The largest market was by far China, with BEVs recording over 7.8 million registrations over the past 12 months (12% annualized growth), followed by the United States (1.274 million 12-month registrations and 6% annualized growth).

Digging deeper, China July 2025 BEV registrations accounted for 31% market share (4% points higher than in July 2024), while plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs) captured 15% of the market ((2% points lower than in July 2024).

In Europe, leglslation is acceleration adoption in Norway and other markets in Scandinavia and elsewhere.

In terms of leading manufacturers of BEVs in the key markets of China and Europe, a price war has seen BYD Auto, Geely and other local OEMs expand their share on the mainland at the expense of Tesla and more expensive local brands, while Volkswagen has stolen a lead on the chasing pack in Europe.
